To do any of the available actions, scroll down until the [...] element is highlighted. Click on it, and you are given a list of possible commands. The commands vary from place to place, depending on what you can do. Choose a command by clicking on it.

If you click on some commands, such as use, they require you to choose an object. You will be given a list of objects in this location, or can choose something you're carrying. For the deserted street, you will be given the following list:

By clicking on "Never mind", you are saying that you don't want to use anything after all. If you click on "pockets", then you are given a list of objects that you are carrying. If you click on "phone box", then you will be given the choice to use the phone box, or use it with something. In this way you can do things like use the hammer with the phone box.

It might all sound complicated- it isn't. Just try it and it should make sense.
